Georgine comes to us with a wealth of experience in the area of homelessness. She was previously the Executive Director of the Greater Cincinnati Coalition for the Homeless, a position she has held for over six years. Prior to that she worked at First Step Home, a shelter and drug-rehabilitation center for women and their children, and for the Cincinnati Parks Foundation. She has degrees from the University of Cincinnati and the University of Northern Iowa. She is the recipient of many awards, including the 2007 Community Partner of the Year from Tender Mercies and 2007 Executive Director of the Year from AIDS Volunteers of Cincinnati. In 2005, CityBeat named her "Coolest Advocate" and also "Best Fighter for the Homeless."

"We consider Georgine a perfect fit for IHN," said Carole Donnelly who led the ED search committee. "She is energetic, passionate about homelessness, a great communicator and a team player." Georgine is very excited and began her new position on March 16. During her first few weeks, she will be making the rounds to meet as many congregation coordinators as she can. We know that everyone will enjoy working with her and we look forward to the continued growth of IHN so that our organization can accomplish good things for the mission and community. Toward that goal, Georgine will work with outgoing Executive Director Robert Moore, who will serve as a consultant during the leadership transition.

New Playroom & New Childcare Coordinator

What began as a dream of being more efficient in meetings with guests has transformed into an exciting reality for IHN. The Procter and Gamble Foundation has generously committed to helping IHN fund a new staff position (within the Homeless Children Thriving and Growing Initiative), Child Care Coordinator, to assist in maximizing the time guests spend in meetings with case managers and medical professionals. This opportunity will give parents more time to work on their case plan, attend classes, and access medical services provided at the Day Center.

Our new Child Care Coordinator, Will Leever, joins IHN with a degree in psychology and several varied experiences working with kids. His interest is child psychology. Will has demonstrated great care and commitment in these few short weeks. Not only do the kids adore him, but he has been very helpful in leveraging resources to assist in equipping the playroom with kid-friendly enriching materials. In addition to caring for kids on–site, his position will entail research and data collection related to the Homeless Children Thriving and Growing Initiative. We are very excited to have him on board. We are also thrilled at the prospect of learning more around issues facing children experiencing homelessness and the impact that has on their well-being.

Thanks to the genius-designing and construction of Anthony Garay, a friend of the IHN Young Professionals group, the playroom itself has been transformed into an amazingly functional space, equipped with white boards, chalkboards, and a magnet board, amazingly all under a budget of under $250.

Thanks also to all the volunteers who assisted in this plan of reinventing the playroom (Andrea and Bertholt Schroeder, Jenny Ward, Jenn Cook, Tony Nguyen, Wade Morris, Blaine Craig, Kevin Neihaus, Destinee, Anthony Garay, and Ashley Tucker). We are so appreciative for the hours of support and hard work that have been invested in this new space. Hopefully the room will be complete and fully functional within the next month. If you haven’t visited the Day Center in a while, now is a good time to come and take a peek!

IHN Hiring for Executive Director Position

The Interfaith Hospitality Network of Greater Cincinnati (IHNGC) is currently searching for a new Executive Director. High School diploma or equivalent and experience related to this position are required.

Duties:
Provide supervision and stimulating activities to children and youth between the ages of 2 months and 18 years. "IHN is one of the only two homeless shelters in Cincinnati that accepts whole families. Most shelters split up the moms and children from the dads."

And she has decided to take on something a little more extensive to help IHN.

"In Judaism, the number 18 is associated with the word chai, which means life. What I want to do is improve lives raising $1,800 for IHN," Laine said.

As of last Friday, she had raised $3,235.

Her bat mitzvah is Nov. 3 at Plum Street Temple.

She said she will continue the theme of helping IHN by providing table decorations that will serve as housewarming gifts for families who leave IHN's housing program.

Contributions can be made to IHN of Greater Cincinnati, 2010 St. Michael St., Cincinnati, OH 45207

Imagine a Tomorrow raises over $20,000

INTERFAITH HOSPITALITY NETWORK OF GREATER CINCINNATI RAISES OVER $20,000 AT “IMAGINE A TOMORROW” FUNDRAISER

“Imagine a Tomorrow” was the theme of a breakfast fundraiser held Tuesday, April 24. More than 165 people gathered for breakfast in the Grand Hall of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center to benefit the Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) of Greater Cincinnati. IHN provides emergency shelter and hospitality to homeless families with the help of 65 interfaith communities across the Greater Cincinnati area.

Click here to see a slide show of pictures taken at the event.

Preliminary estimates suggest that the breakfast event, the second annual fundraising event in the organization’s 16-year history, brought in more than $20,000. The program asked participants to imagine a time when no child in the area would experience the sorrows and pain of homelessness.

Homelessness hurts no one more than children. In fact, families with children are the fastest growing segment of the homeless population in the Cincinnati area.
For 16 years, IHN has been serving homeless families and individuals of Greater Cincinnati. Each host congregation furnishes overnight lodging for one week every two to three months, on a rotating schedule. In addition to the services offered by the religious congregations, the IHN staff offers a host of critical services, including case management counseling and referral services to help families find and keep stable housing and transportation between the IHN Day Center and host congregations.
IHN has proven itself to be remarkably effective. Last year in Greater Cincinnati, 108 families, including 229 children, received emergency shelter, caseworker assistance, and access to essential social services. In the past year at least 71% of the families leaving the program obtained stable housing, and that figure may be closer to 90% based upon data indicating the rate of recidivism to area family shelters. The Cincinnati network includes 22 hosting congregations and 43 supporting congregations that donate food, volunteer assistance, and supplies.

The secret of IHN’s success is the supply of goodhearted volunteers from the religious community combined with professionals who work to reintegrate the families into the community.

IHN fills an important niche among shelters for homeless people in Cincinnati. Of the more than 30 shelters in Cincinnati, the Interfaith Hospitality Network is one of only two shelters that will house two-parent families, single fathers, and families with teenage boys.

The organization provides these essential services cost efficiently. Drawing on the resources of area religious congregations, IHN provides shelter for half the cost of traditional shelters. For every dollar of operating expenses the organization incurs, 65 cents worth of services – meals and lodging – is donated.

A typical day for the homeless guests involves arriving at the host congregation in time for a hot dinner that volunteers have cooked. They spend the evening visiting, doing homework, crafts, or enjoying entertainment provided by volunteers. It could be a sing-a-long, a magic show, a simple conversation. Then each family retires to its private sleeping space for the night. They wake up bright and early, eat breakfast, grab their bag lunches, and get ready to board the IHN bus.

During the day the IHN bus transports families to appointments, interviews and day care. It takes guests to the host congregation every evening at 5 p.m., then back to the Day Center every morning at 6:30 a.m. The Greater Cincinnati Foundation realized the importance of IHN as a community asset and funded a new bus in 2005 to replace the 20-year-old one.

At the Day Center, people take part in adult education classes. They can also use the kitchen, the laundry and take a shower … small things that seem like luxuries when you don’t have a home. The Day Center also gives them a mailing address and telephone number.

Case managers focus on helping families find and keep permanent housing. Families learn about setting priorities in searching for work and housing. The adults have a better chance of concentrating on their job and housing search since they know their children will have a roof over their heads through IHN.

Volunteers are the key – people who give of their time and their checkbooks. Individuals can encourage their congregation to become a host or support congregation, or they can volunteer at the Day Center or with a host or support congregation, or donate money or in-kind supplies. The girls said that they enjoyed the drop off day at Milford First UMC, when they got to meet people that wanted to help, and they also thought that visiting the Day Center to deliver the bags was fun. They were featured in the Cincinnati Enquirer hometown section and got to speak about IHN to many of their classes at school. They said that they learned how important it is to help other people. In addition, they have inspired the Boy Scouts to collect items for IHN as well!

You can see a slide show of pictures from today by clicking here.

Channel 5 story to air tonight

The Channel 5 news feature story about IHN will air tonight, Monday, February 19, 2007 between 5:00-5:30pm. Over the two weeks that the 52 volunteers were here they exceeded all of our expectations for Community Care Week. The total list of projects they completed is:
- basement: replaced the drop ceiling, repainted the floor with a high-traffic skid-proof epoxy paint and put new base board down
- kitchen: new vinyl floor tiles, painted kitchen cabinets and walls, replaced ceiling tiles and installed a new microwave and stove
- guest bathroom: new paint and decorations
- Ann/Drew's Office: painted the walls and installed custom shelves (Dave Schonkweiler and Dustin Mohring)
- Two Day Rooms: painted the walls and ceiling, redecorated, reupholstered the furniture, and a new TV
As you can see to some extent in the pictures, the work of the US Bank volunteers brought a fresh, new, feeling to many of the spaces that the guests use everyday. Hooray!!

The Work:<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; I think it is socially and morally unacceptable that our socioeconomic system forces children into homelessness. Children are the most vulnerable of the homeless population, and the experience results in physical, mental, educational, emotional and social problems for them, some likely to be long-term if not permanent. Two Family Physicians assess the children in our program for such problems, and another visiting physician assesses children aged 0 to 3 in our program for neural developmental problems, and is finding a high rate. Fortunately, these children are being diagnosed and referred for treatment-hopefully, in time to prevent life-long problems.

Fortunately, there are steps we can take to alleviate the situation now and reduce the rate of homeless children in the future. First, we can support the efforts of Family Shelters like IHN. You can support IHN in two ways to make us more effective: you can donate money and you can help us add more congregations to the Network of hosting and supporting congregations. Second, to reduce the numbers of homeless children in the future, you can urge your Federal legislators to oppose reducing Low Income Housing Vouchers (also known as Section 8 vouchers and to support the increase of affordable housing and housing assistance for low income families. The National Low Income Housing Coalition (www.nlihc.org) and the Coalition on Homelessness and Housing in Ohio (www.cohhio.org) are great sources of information on this topic and homelessness and housing in general and offer tips on communicating with your elected officials.

Hospitality: IHN Coordinators' Recipe Book

Thanks to all of the volunteers, coordinators, staff, and board that contributed to this wonderful recipe book. Why is it hard for them to get back into housing of their own after they have become homeless? Not only are we asked these questions a lot, we ask them often ourselves, both in general and also in relation to each family we serve. We ask that each time something changes, like the number of people calling for shelter goes up (it averages around 12-15 calls a day), or the average length of stay with IHN increases (it was up to 33 days for the first 2 months of this year compared to slightly more than 22 days last year), or all the family shelters are full, or when we look into the eyes of a homeless mother, and the wordless question behind the look of hurt and fear and anger is “why is this happening to us?”

It may not help her feel any better to know that they are not alone; that 40% of all homeless now are in families, that children are, at 32%, the fastest growing segment of the homeless population. She won’t be comforted by the fact that about 2,500 families experience homelessness in our area every year, and that on any given night, 2,000 people may be homeless.

She may feel a little better that her family is one of the 80 to 100 families that we will help with shelter and meals this year. She may feel a little hope when she finds out that at least 73% of the families we helped last year found stable housing upon leaving IHN, and that over 90% probably found housing because less than 7% returned to a shelter in our area. And we know that she feels a lot better knowing that there are people out there who she’d never met before-the volunteers at the congregations where she’s stayed-who care about her. Knowing that people DO care is, in fact, what most of our guests tell us made the biggest difference.

It may not help her feel better to understand why families are homeless and why it’s hard for them to regain stable housing, but it could help us understand what needs to be done to help the situation. United Way of Greater Cincinnati is trying to understand the reasons behind some our area’s top social and economic problems so that they can help support programs that might effectively address the problems by reducing or eliminating them as well as helping those directly affected by them. What they’ve found out confirms what the Greater Cincinnati Homeless Coalition found out several years ago in a major study of homelessness in our area, that people are homeless mainly because of lack of available affordable housing and lack of sufficient income.

While there are other worsening factors, the bottom line is that there simply isn’t enough affordable housing available for low income people in our area-or most areas, for that matter. Homelessness is a huge national problem as well as a local one. Those who feel the lack of affordable housing the most are those who have the least resources, called persons with Extremely Low Income (ELI), federally defined as income 30% or less than the average median income. Nationally, 56% of this income group spends more than 50% of their income on rent, and for every 100 ELI renters, there were only 84 units of affordable housing.

Another gauge of affordability is to look at the Fair Market Rate (FMR), which is HUD’s estimate of what a family would expect to pay for rent and utilities for modest housing. In the Cincinnati area, the FMR for a two bedroom apartment is $706 a month, but the ELI income of a family in this area is only $19,200. According to HUD, a household should spend no more than 30% of their income on housing in order to have enough for food, clothing, and other basics. An ELI family, therefore, could pay only $480 for housing. To afford FMR housing, a family would need an income of at least $12.73 an hour, yet few jobs for workers with no more than a high school education pay more than $9.00 an hour.

Even at $12.73 an hour, a family of four would have a hard time making ends meet. While the current federal poverty level is $18,392 for a family of four, research has indicated that a family of four needs to be twice the federal poverty level, or 200% of poverty, to provide for their basic needs: housing, food, clothing, transportation, health care and child care. Even at this level, with an income of $36,784, a family of four is living on the edge of hardship. United Way has joined many other organizations and institutions in recognizing that income below 200% of poverty classifies a family as “low income.” In Ohio, that includes 26.2% of all working families.

Currently, local organizations are working to both gain more information about the status of affordable housing in our area and to advocate for increased availability of affordable housing. In particular, Affordable Housing Advocates, which grew out of concern for the reduction of affordable housing through the destruction of Huntingdon Meadows and threatened destruction of English Woods, has joined organizationally with Cincinnatians for Affordable Housing to create a more viable group. Current efforts aim at convincing the City to expand its efforts to create affordable housing and to do the same with Cincinnati Metropolitan Authority. Some landlords have joined the effort, both strengthening the advocacy and providing some additional affordable housing.

While this is an immense problem, it is heartening that there are many who not only believe that everyone has a right to housing, they are willing to work to that end. IHN certainly sets an example of compassion for the homeless throughout the community, compassion accompanied by action. That it is faith in action makes it even stronger—and gives more cause for home for that homeless mother and her family who found caring hospitality through IHN.

IHN In need of Supplies

At our Day Center, we provide our guests with such necessities as:

Diapers (all sizes)

Toothpaste (preferably small tubes)

Deodorant

Detergent for the washing machine

Currently, we are running low on all of these supplies. Our current bus is a 1985 Blue Bird bus, painted blue with our name on the side in white. We use our bus twice a day, 365 days per year to transport families between the Day Center and the congregation at which they spend the evening and night. Our current bus is old and run down, and in need of constant repairs. Thanks to three foundations, including GCF, IHN will be transporting our guests in a brand new bus pretty soon! Stay tuned for updates on our new bus.

The purpose of The Greater Cincinnati Foundation is to empower donors to make a profound difference in the quality of human and community life in the Greater Cincinnati region, today and tomorrow. We believe in the power of philanthropy to change the lives of people and communities. As a community foundation, GCF makes grants and provides leadership in six key areas: arts and culture, community progress, education, the environment, health, and human services. An effective steward of the community's charitable resources since 1963, the Foundation inspires philanthropy in eight counties in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana.

For more information, visit GCF on the web.

Save the Date for our Annual Golf Outing

This just in...

The 3rd Annual IHNGC Golf Outing will be on Friday, July 15, 2005 at Flagg Springs Golf Course in California, KY. The Souper Bowl of Caring will happen the weekend of Super Bowl Sunday (February 5 and 6, 2005). The premise is simple: have members of your youth group sign up to stand at the exits of your congregation after your service with big soup pots, to collect donations as people leave the building. Many of our host and support congregations collect money to donate to IHNGC every February. Last year, we collectively raised $4,663.90--that's pretty amazing when you consider that many people dropped $1 or $5 bills into the soup pots as they left!

If you are interested in running a Souper Bowl of Caring, read on for 5 Easy Steps:

1. Ask for permission from your minister/pastor/rabbi.

2. Recruit members of your youth group to man the pots. I bring my own, but if your church has a kitchen, you can get pots there. I use three pots, one for each way out of church and get three youth to volunteer after each mass.

3. Make an announcement in the Bulletin the week before the “Souper Bowl.” Here are some examples:

EXAMPLE:
We will hold our third annual “Souper Bowl” here at St. Columban next weekend after all masses. Look for the youth with the “Soup” kettles on your way out of mass next weekend. Our donations stay in Cincinnati, benefiting Interfaith Hospitality
Network of Greater Cincinnati. Please be generous in your response.

        EXAMPLE:
Next Sunday is the Super Bowl, it also marks St. Columban’s second participation in a
nationwide initiative called “Souper Bowl of Caring.” The first “Souper Bowl” began in
1990 with 22 congregations participating, last year over 10,000 churches participated,
raising $3.1 million on Super Bowl Sunday. On “Souper Bowl” Sunday, we ask parishioners to drop a dollar or two into a soup pot on their way out of mass. The money collected at St. Columban will be donated to Interfaith Hospitality Network of Greater Cincinnati. Interfaith provides shelter, meals, and assistance to homeless families through local churches. They also connect these families with the resources that meet their most urgent needs while helping to find permanent housing and work opportunities. Youth group members have volunteered to man the “soup pots” after each mass next weekend. Please be generous and help us make this outreach program as successful here at St. Columban as it is at other churches nationwide.

4. Make a verbal announcement at all masses on “Souper Bowl” weekend. Here is an example of an announcement.

        EXAMPLE:

On this Super Bowl Sunday we are once again participating in a nationwide initiative to help house and feed the homeless. In the Narthex, there are volunteers with soup pots. Please drop a couple of dollars into the pot on your way out of mass today. The money collected will be donated to the Interfaith Hospitality Network of Greater Cincinnati. Please help us make this a successful outreach effort.

On Super Bowl Weekend, I attend all services to supervise the youth and make sure they have all the exits attended. I count the money on Sunday afternoon and turn it in at the office where they will send a check to Interfaith for the full amount.

5. Put a thank you in the weekly bulletin the weekend after the Souper Bowl. Here is an example:

EXAMPLE:
Thanks to your generosity last week, $1200 was raised for the Interfaith Hospitality Network of Greater Cincinnati.
